How to find a good videographer in Australia

So, you think you need a videographer, but what does that really mean?

Unlike ‘photographer’, the term ‘videographer’ can refer to not only the camera operator but also the digital video production crew, on-site and post-production.

Anvil Media videographers shooting a professional corporate videoIn a professional video production, a business like Anvil Media offers all that from the one source — a producer and production crew, as well as a video editor and animator back in the video-editing suite.

The term ‘videography’ was first coined by Bob Kriger in a 1972 special issue of American Cinematographer to describe ‘film-type productions using electronic image recording and electronic post-production techniques’.

Kriger cited 5 major breakthroughs in television technology as a precursor to ‘state-of-the-art videography’:

  • portable cameras and recording equipment
  • hi-band colour videotape machines
  • more precise electronic editing
  • double system sound editing (ability to edit frame-accurate audio and add sound effects and music to live recorded sound)
  • quality tape-to-film transferring.

Since Kriger’s predictions of how soon videotape would become the major production medium, digital production has continued to evolve into the complex medium it is today.

Videography now encompasses digital animation, gaming, web streaming, video blogging, slideshows and much more.

Finding the right videographer for your video starts after you’ve thought through your initial brief.

  • What’s the purpose of your video?
  • Who is your target audience?
  • What’s your key message?
  • How will you use the video?
  • What’s your budget?
