Free range eggs exist to meet consumer expectations about the way their eggs are farmed. But what if the chooks don’t want to meet consumer expectations? What determines whether chickens prefer to go outside, or hang around in the shed?

This research looks at the factors that determine whether free range chickens really do range free. And it turns out sunlight is a big factor.
