Most Australians would be familiar with the iconic Australian gardening brand, Yates. Established in Sydney by Arthur Yates in 1887, the company has supplied seeds and a wide range of garden care products to Australian gardeners for 125 years.

To commemorate its 125th anniversary, Yates sought to capture the history and evolution of the business in a video presentation. Anvil Media was awarded the project and Senior Producer Michael Neil-Smith took the lead.

“I knew from past experience that Anvil Media were good at developing corporate videos for our needs,” said Judy Horton, Yates’ Communications Manager. “Michael’s personal interest in history and his expertise in creating historical videos reinforced our decision to choose Anvil Media for this project. The result has ended up being even better than we’d expected.”

Yates is fortunate to have extensive and well laid out archives, and Michael worked his way through the content to gather resources that would tell the Yates story well. “We have some really great photos and memorabilia,” said Judy. “Michael was able to pull together some real gems and showcase what a colourful and interesting history the company has had.”

The six-minute video produced by Anvil Media contains a mix of archival and modern images as well as a live interview with Judy Horton (courtesy of 3rd Party Productions NZ). Music chosen reflects the changing eras, and Anvil Media’s Tony Crowley provides the voiceover.

“The corporate video Michael produced not only captures the Yates story but it also frames it within the context of the country’s changing times over the past 125 years,” said Judy. “This includes how Yates met the needs of Australians during the Depression, war years and post war years too.”

The Board of DuluxGroup (which owns Yates) watched the DVD when it was first produced. Judy said the feedback she received was that board members were very impressed and really enjoyed watching it.

Yates is planning a range of celebratory events throughout 2012 and the commemorative video is an important tool in telling the company’s story. It will be used internally and at external events, displaying the company’s origins and evolution to a variety of audiences.
